Mazda resurrected the rotary -- a unique engine design long cherished for its simplicity and low rotational inertia - for the RX-EVOLV Concept at the 1999 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

The previous version of this engine made 255 horsepower with the help of twin turbochargers. Along with the RX-7, it departed these shores after the 1995 model year but has continued in the Japanese market. The new version of the rotary, called RENESIS (short for Rotary Engine geNESIS,) is normally aspirated, yet it makes 280 horsepower and revs to a superbike-like 10,000 rpm, while also meeting Japan's stringent low-emissions vehicle standards. The power gain results in part from relocating the intake and exhaust ports to the side covers (instead of in the rotor housing,) and from a new three-stage variable intake manifold.

Chassis layout, which features wheels pushed out to the far corners of the platform, is designed to maximize interior space, so that normal-sized adults can ride in back in comfort. Clamshell style doors - with rear-hinged rear doors that open to 90 degrees - will facilitate ingress and egress. The four-seat platform intentionally strays from sports car purity, but other tenets of Mazda's design philosophy are music to any enthusiast's ears. These include the relentless pursuit of low weight, rear-wheel drive, 50/50 weight distribution, and a front-midship engine location that places the engine even lower and more rearward than its predecessor. Complementing the engine's performance is a six-speed automanual transmission with Formula 1-style, finger-operated shift paddles located just behind the steering wheel.
