Toyota is working with BMW on a new sports car that may or may not be called Supra.' And if the new car looks half as good as the graphite grey FT-1 concept car the company showed at the 2014 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, then we're pretty sure Toyota will have a success on its hands.
Rather than telling you what we do know about the sexy FT-1 concept, let's tell you what we don't know: what the heck powers it. Toyota's lips are sealed on the subject; however, rumor is the forthcoming Toyota/BMW sports car will be a high-performance hybrid.Â
While the FT-1's powertrain may remain a mystery, we do know it has a front-mounted engine that powers the rear wheels (i.e. the ingredients of any successful sports car). It also has a retractable rear wing to keep its rear end firmly planted to the ground, implying that the FT-1 will have no trouble reaching high speeds.
Though the exterior of the FT-1 may be the concept car's most attention-grabbing feature, its interior is a compelling piece of design as well. Driver-oriented, the cockpit of the FT-1 features thin sports seats covered in rich saddle-colored leather, a set of gauges located on the steering wheel rim (just like a Formula 1 car) and a pair of large paddle shifters just aft of the steering wheel. In front of the driver sits a heads-up display unit that puts important vehicle information directly in the driver's line of vision.
Antsy to drive the FT-1? Thanks to a tie-in with the video game series Gran Turismo, Toyota will let you take its gorgeous sports car concept for a spin in the Playstation3 videogame Gran Turismo 6. Fortunately, the latest rumors suggest that Toyota's all-new sports car will come to fruition before 2017, meaning you'll only have to drive the FT-1 in a virtual environment for a couple of years before you can head to the dealer to buy the real thing.
