The 1989 Viper RT/10 Concept was first displayed at the 1989 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan. Although not intended to be put into production, media and consumer reaction was so great that Dodge decided to go ahead with the production version. The concept car featured a similar engine to the production version's V10, but the car's body was built of steel instead of fiberglass. The concept car now resides in the Chrysler Museum in Detroit.
