Tesla Referral has a well known issue where a drain in the charge port area becomes plugged with dirt, leaves, etc. and a water puddle forms in the lower area where the charge port motor and circuit board sits, submerging them and destroying them permanently. You can't see this drain or problem area until you remove the charge port assembly.
The symptoms include a charge port door that only closes intermittently, or opens and closes randomly, won't open or close at all, or even gives the wrong "closed" or "open" message on the dash display.
The charge port assembly is fairly easy to change. You need to remove the rear tail light assembly (three screws from inside the trunk) and then the charge port door assembly. Thankfully, you do NOT have to deal with any high voltage wiring and NO PROGRAMMING IS REQUIRED. It is truly plug and play.
I installed this part in my personal late 2016 (facelifted) Model S recently in about 20-25 minutes total with basic tools. It was my first one, so I could probably do it again in about 15 minutes. My port had become intermittent and then stopped working completely. How nice to have it working 100% again! There are several YouTube videos that walk you through the installation and they are VERY helpful.
The drain is right in front of you when the assembly is removed and you can unplug it easily with a small piece of wire, a small screwdriver, etc. Mine was full of water.
