This is the trueoriginal super 65K model. We have tested our HEI distributor up to 7000 rpm on an SBC 350 engine with 13:1 compression ratio, and made 535 hp on the dyno.
Be sure you have sufficient firewall clearance before purchasing. This unit is one full inch wider in diameter, and approximately one and a half inches taller compared to a point style distributor.If your carcame equipped with an HEI unit, then you should not have a problem. The firewall tunnel on many GMvehicles with point style distributors will allow space for the full size HEI unit with the Super cap, but there are some that do not have enough clearance.
It is usually the large flat coil cover on the Super cap that causes a fit issue. If you think this unit may not work, we have the OEM style HEI unit with a smaller coil cover, rather than the large flat coil covers on units referred to as"Super Caps." Our 6500 distributors all have the large flat Super Cap coil cover. Our 6501 HEI distributors all have the original equipment style coil cover. The letter at the end of the part numbers designates the color of the cap. The OE style coil cover on our 6501 models is tapered down on the top sides, and offers slightly more clearance than the Super Cap. Both units function exactly the same. The only difference is the appearance.
If you think the 6501 unit with the OE style cap is still not small enough, then you may need the small base ready to run HEI unit. It has a base and cap the size of an original point distributor, but requires an external coil. These are called "Ready to Run"or "Small BaseHEIDistributors." The part number is 6701 for Chevy engines. See our other listings for a full variety of distributors.

This is the perfect upgrade for your classic Chevy, or just as part of a tune-up. It would not be practical to re-install the original HEI in your engine if you are overhauling it.
Here are a few problems you are likely to encounter when using an old end shaft play

These are just a few issues with old distributors. For the low cost of a completely new one, it just makes little sense to use the original distributor. When we rebuild any early model Chevy engine, we insist the customer purchase a new distributor. You will notice a performance difference in your engine if you have any of the above issues with your old distributor. All of the old HEI's we see have excess end play in the shaft. I'm sure the coils on them are not at full voltage. This is much more than the OEM model. All car makers have dramatically improved the ignition systems over the years on cars and trucks. This is an indication of how important it is to have a proper ignition system.

This distributor also has the performance curve setup. Do not be misled into thinking other HEI's on the market are superior to this. If anything, they are most likely the older version. We have sold more HEI's than any seller, and weprovide the newest models available.
Important Note.
The part numbers for distributors beginning with 65 and 85 are interchangeable. The distributors are identical in every respect. We changed the artwork on the package to private labeling and our supplier had to change our part number to distinguish our private label (85 series) from the standard labeling sold to other suppliers (65 series). You may receive the alternate part number since we still have both in stock.
Installation Instructions.

Remove the distributor cap from the HEI distributor. Place the distributor gasket up over the gear arm of the distributor and set it in place underneath the distributor body. Apply a thin layer of silicon gel between the distributor and the gasket and the distributor gasket and the engine to create a better seal once the distributor is seated on the engine. Silicon gel is a liquid gasket that is used frequently in performance shops to help seal two parts together, even if they have a gasket to line the joint already. Silicon liquid gasket dries into a rubber product that helps bind a gasket in place, preventing leaks.

Turn the distributor so that the rotor will be in the same place as the factory rotor when the engine was stopped and before the old distributor was removed. Insert the distributor gear into the engine. As the distributor gear meshes with the cam shaft, the distributor's rotor will turn. Get the distributor installed with the rotor in the same position as the old one was before it was removed. If the rotor moves when inserting the distributor into the engine, rotate the rotor enough so that after inserted, the rotor is in the correct location

Tighten the distributor hold-down fastener just enough so that it is snug. The distributor housing will need to be turned so that the vacuum canister is also pointed in the same direction as the old canister before it was removed. Both the distributor rotor and the vacuum canister need to be positioned in the same way as the old ones were, so that the timing will be close enough to the original to get the engine started. Mixed and matched rotors and vacuum canisters can prevent the engine from starting, thus eliminating the chance to correct the timing.

Place the distributor cap onto the distributor. Connect the spark plug wires onto the distributor cap in the correct order. Spark plug wires should be marked prior to removing an old distributor so that when a new distributor is installed, the wires can be reconnected easily and in the correct order. Starting with the spark plug wire from the number one cylinder, begin to replace the wires one at a time going from cylinder one to cylinder eight.

Connect the vacuum hose to the vacuum canister of the HEI distributor. You can connect a tachometer to the adapter located on the side of the HEI distributor cap. Start the engine and check the timing to get the new HEI distributor tuned properly. The new HEI distributor will let a factory engine burn more fuel. The timing of the spark is important to get right, and the timing should be adjusted each time the demand for power is increased. After the timing has been adjusted, tighten the HEI distributor hold-down fastener completely to finish the job.
