1-Retrieveand repair all PCM trouble codes, check for any available TSBs or PCM re—flashupdates.
·Onsome vehicles, the manufacturer may have issued Technical Service Bulletinsindicating re-flash updates of the PCM are required to resolve emissionsproblems.
2- Repair all exhaust system leaks.
·Asmall leak anywhere in the exhaust system can draw a significant amount ofoxygen into the system.
3- Make sure the vehicle is in properfuel control.
·Proper AFR (Air / Fuel Ratio) is essential for converterefficiency.
·Front 02 sensor should be switching around 450 mV
·Rear 02 sensor is above or equal to 450 mV, typically 650 - 85 0mV. (On most applications)
4-Test forcontamination.
·An internal leak in the cooling system would allow coolant to enterthe exhaust system and poison the catalytic converter.
5- Choose the correct part for the application.
·States complying with Federal / EPA emissions standards use vehicleYear, Make, Model and Engine Size.
·States complying with California Air Resources Board (CARB)emissions standards use vehicle Year, Make, Model, Engine Size and EngineFamily Number (EFN).
COMMON NON-WARRANTABLE CONVERTER FAILURES
1-OVERHEATED,MELTED OR BROKEN
Potential causes:
1.Misfires
·LowCompression
·Poorspark, or no spark
2.AFR cylinder imbalance
2-COATED /OIL-FOULED SUBSTRATE
Potential Causes:
1- ExcessiveCarbon build-up in Exhaust
2-Internal coolant leaks (head/ intake gasket)
3-Use of non-converter-safe gasket sealants
4-Excessive oil consumption (burning oil)
5-Improper fuels or additives (diesel)
Potential causes:
2-Thermal shock
3-Metal fatigue / Stress fractures
4-Cracked manifolds can cause false O2 readings.
5-Stripped O2 Sensors threads
6-Flex pipe failure
